CHARLESTOWN SQUARE – AWABAKAL COUNTRY

We acknowledge the Awabakal people as the Traditional Custodians of the land on which Charlestown Square resides.

We acknowledge the Elders past, present and emerging.

Charlestown Square rests on the traditional land of the Awabakal people.

The Awabakal traditional territory spreads from Wollombi, to the Lower Hunter River near Newcastle and Lake Macquarie in the north.

In the traditional language, Awaba is the word for Lake Macquarie, meaning ‘flat or plain surface’. Awabakal became the term for people from this area, and they were known for being skilled hunter-fisher-gatherers.

At Charlestown Square, we extend a warm welcome to all First Nations people, and we pay our respect to their ongoing connection to land, water and community.
